ESTIMATE GRAIN SIZE IN METALS FOR FABRICATION
Metals are commonly used in various fields and products, from infrastructure facilities to buildings and electronic devices. Their types also vary widely; manufacturers must select appropriate materials according to the application and purpose. Therefore their grain size and properties are important as their grain properties can change due to heat treatment and other factors.
When a new grain is nucleated during processing (as in solidification or annealing after cold working), the atoms within each growing grain are lined up in a specific pattern that depends upon the crystal structure of the metal or alloy. To properly evaluate grain size in materials, our expert testing team will estimate the grain size number by visually comparing the metal structure sample magnified with a microscope against the standard diagram.
PTS performs grain size analysis that conforms to ASTM E112 on a wide range of metallic and non-metallic materials.
Comparison Method
The comparison method allows for an efficient and relatively accurate evaluation of the grain size under a microscope against standardized charts, with +/- 1 grain size number of repeatability and reproducibility of ratings.
Planimetric Method
The planimetric method involves calculating the number of grains in a known area to determine the grain size level, with less than +/- 0.5 grain size units of repeatability and reproducibility of ratings.
APPLICATION OF ASTM GRAIN SIZE ANALYSIS:
Evaluate the heat treatment or manufacturing process on material
Correlate the mechanical properties with grain size of the material
