VAPORISED METAL TO IDENTIFY CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) is carried out on a wide range of metals and alloys to help identify the different materials in the metal sample. Arc and spark excitation (Arc Spark OES) is the preferred method for metal analysis to determine the chemical composition of metallic samples. It involves exposing the sample to an electrical spark and measuring the wavelengths of light emitted. This data then allows us to determine the proportion of elements present within the sample.

The Spark – OES method uses a sparking process where an electrical discharge is applied to the analysed area. This will cause a small amount of material to be vaporised. This sparking process causes a distinct chemical signature to be created, allowing our expert Chemistry testing team at Professional testing service to determine the elemental breakdown of the sample. Results are generally given in percentage of each constituent element.

This process is widely used in the metal-making industries, including primary producers, foundries, die casters and manufacturing. Due to their rapid analysis time and inherent accuracy, arc spark optical emission spectroscopy systems are most effective in controlling the processing of alloys.
