MAGNIFY TO REVEAL CRACKS ON METALS
Microstructure examination & inclusion content
Microscopic examinations are the examination of the etched or non-etched sample with a microscope at 50 to 500 times magnification. This technique reveals microscopic properties by examining the cross-section of the welded joint.
During the Microstructure Analysis of metals and alloys, a microscopic examination is conducted to study the microstructural features of the material under magnification. The properties of a material determine hot cracks, cold cracks, lamellar tearing, voids, melt deficiency, solidification structure and grain structure, etc., to reveal the features.
PTS provides a wide range of services pertaining to micro-evaluation for examination under microscopic instruments. Microscopic testing is typically performed on delicate samples under high-powered optical devices or Scanning Electron Microscopes.
Some of the methods include:
- Coating thickness measurement
- Fractography
- Failure Analysis
- Pitting and Crevice Corrosion
- Inspection
- Photomicrography
- Inclusion content
- Porosity percentage
- Depth analysis
APPLICATION OF MICRO-ETCHING EXAMINATION:
The etched or non-etched test specimen surface is examined with a larger magnification (>50X) using metallography micro-scopes
Micro-structure determination, grain size, grain orientation, phase sedimentation etc. can be determined
Common Test Methods
ASTM E3
ASTM E407
