CHECK FOR CRACK THROUGH CRUSH DEFORMATION
IMPORTANCE OF FLARING TEST ON WELDED STEEL PIPE
Flaring Test or Drift-expanding test determining the ability of metallic tubes of circular cross-section to undergo plastic deformation in drift expansion.
Testing approach
The flaring test verifies the formability of tubes by expanding on a mandrel up to a determined amount without forming initial cracks. It is to test the ultimate plastic deformation ability of seamless steel pipes under the given conditions and crush deformation without crack defects.
Flaring tests are performed to determine the ductility of the test specimen as an angled conical mandrel is inserted and plunged into the pipe specimen, which causes the pipe to expand. The extent of flaring is dictated by the expansion of the inner or outer diameter of the pipe stated in relevant product specifications. Flaring Tests are also mainly performed on sections of seamless and seam-welded pipes.
Application of flaring test
Suitable for seamless pipe and welded pipe
Evaluate the ductility of weld seams
Detect defective weld seams on metal tubes
