A shear test is designed to apply stress to a test sample so that it experiences a sliding failure along a plane parallel to the forces involved. Shear tests differ from tension and compression tests in that the forces applied are parallel to the two contact surfaces, whereas, in tension and compression, they are perpendicular to the contact surfaces. Generally, shear forces cause one surface of a material to move in one direction and the other surface to move in the opposite direction, so the material is stressed in a sliding motion.
The most common measurement obtained from a shear test is the shear strength which is the maximum load a material can withstand in a direction parallel to the face of the material, as opposed to perpendicular to its surface. It is also possible to measure the shear modulus, the shear strain, and the shear yield stress when performing shear tests
