The oil and gas industry is an important and key player in the world today. Welding in this industry is a critical element of joining components in all areas; flanges are necessary for high-pressure or large-size applications.
Pipe flanges are often used to connect pipes or to other equipment. Connections through the pipeline are a crucial channel for transporting steam and fluids along with gas from refineries to factories or across continents. Since different substances travel through the pipes’ flanges at high speed and pressure, the demands on these components are high. Hence narrow tolerances on the flanges and pipelines must be used.

Flanging Test is a test method for determining the ability of metallic tubes of circular cross-section to undergo plastic deformation during flange formation. The flanging test to ISO 8494 and ASTM A370 is a test method in which the end of a tube is bent by 90°. The flanging test is normally performed on tubes having an outside diameter of 150 mm and a wall thickness no greater than 10 mm.

WHY IS THE FLANGING TEST IMPORTANT FOR PIPE WELDING?

When welded onto the pipes, the flanges become deformed. Therefore, they often have to be processed once more after welding to ensure the quality and fit of the connection. This extra processing of the connection costs both time and money. Therefore flanging test is important for pipe welding as they reduce post-welding processing of flanges due to distortion is a high cost and time saver for the oil and gas industry.
Like flaring tests, a flanging test is carried out by expanding a pipe section using an angled conical mandrel. However, in this test, the end of the pipe is formed until an angle of 90° is achieved, simulating a flange. Additionally, the flanging test shall be performed until the inner or outer diameter of the pipe is expanded as per relevant product specifications.

Traditionally, the method used to prove the integrity of a weld would involve flooding the pipeline to hydro test. This proves to be time-consuming and costly. The test determines, through plastic deformation, whether tubes are suitable for flange formation.
